MALUNGGAY HERBAL TEA AND POLVORON MAKING BRGY. PALUGSI-LIMMANSANGAN
A community engagement activity focusing on the promotion of alternative medicine and sustainable nutrition was successfully conducted on February 28, 2026, in Barangay Palugsi-Limmansangan. The activity was led by Master of Arts in Nursing (MAN) students as part of their commitment to community health development and preventive care. The initiative aimed to empower local constituents by equipping them with knowledge and practical skills in utilizing malunggay (Moringa oleifera), a widely available plant known for its significant nutritional and medicinal benefits. The program formally commenced with an opening session, during which the MAN students introduced themselves and explained the purpose and objectives of the activity. This was followed by an informative discussion on alternative medicine, emphasizing its role as a complementary approach to conventional healthcare. The students highlighted the importance of using natural, affordable, and locally sourced materials in promoting health and preventing illness, especially in communities with limited access to healthcare services. Central to the discussion was malunggay, recognized for its high content of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. The students provided an in-depth explanation of its health benefits, including its potential to boost immunity, improve digestion, and support overall wellness. They also addressed common misconceptions and ensured that participants understood the proper and safe use of herbal remedies. Following the lecture, a hands-on demonstration on malunggay herbal tea preparation was conducted. The MAN students carefully demonstrated each step, starting from the proper selection and harvesting of fresh malunggay leaves to thorough cleaning, drying, and brewing techniques. Emphasis was placed on hygiene, correct proportions, and preparation methods to preserve the plant’s nutritional value. The participants actively engaged in the process, replicating the procedures under the supervision of the facilitators. This interactive component fostered confidence among the participants and encouraged active learning. Subsequently, a second practical session was held focusing on the preparation of malunggay polvoron. This activity aimed to introduce a creative and culturally acceptable way of incorporating malunggay into everyday food. The students demonstrated how malunggay powder could be blended with traditional polvoron ingredients to enhance its nutritional value without compromising taste and texture. Participants were grouped and given the opportunity to prepare their own malunggay polvoron, promoting teamwork, cooperation, and hands-on experience. Throughout the activity, the constituents of Barangay Palugsi-Limmansangan displayed enthusiasm, curiosity, and willingness to learn. They actively participated in discussions, asked relevant questions, and shared personal insights regarding traditional health practices. The MAN students facilitated an open and supportive environment that encouraged knowledge exchange and community involvement. The activity concluded with a brief evaluation and feedback session, where participants expressed appreciation for the knowledge and skills they acquired. Many participants acknowledged the practicality and affordability of the techniques taught, noting that these could be easily applied in their daily lives. The MAN students also reinforced key learnings and encouraged the community to continuously practice and share the knowledge gained with others. This UCC initiative through the Master of Arts in Nursing and Bachelor of Science in Nursing Programs aligns with SDG 3 (Health and Wellbeing), SDG 17 (Partnership for Goals), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and SDG 11 (Empowering Cities and Communities).
